Denny has been carving miniature caricatures and Santas (his
favorites)
for 20 years. He has won many blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair and
other
carving competitions. He also teaches woodcarving class at his home
studio
in Des Moines.
Denny's favorite carving tools are knives. In the early '90s he found
it
difficult to locate a good knife at an affordable price so started
experimenting
with making knives, using different types of steel. He was not having
much
luck until he found O1 tool steel. O1 tool steel is designed for hand
tools
and works very well when hardened and properly heat-treated. Once he
figured
this out, he started making knives in 1993 as a part time business
selling
them to local carvers. Since 1997 he has been making knives full time
and
selling them through out the United States.
In 1999 Denny started making and selling gouges. Some are standard
sizes,
and others are a result of special requests from carvers.
All of his knives and gouges are made of the finest O1 tool steel. He
uses
wood handles made of oak because he prefers the feel of the wood. All
of
his regular knife blades are glued and riveted in three places for
extra
holding power. His smallest detail knives are mounted in the handle
with
epoxy. The back edge of the knife blade has been rounded to allow for
ease
of cutting through the wood. In 2002, he started using laser cut blanks
for
all his tools.
The knives and gouges come sharpened and ready to carve.
